Admission Deadline: January 15, 2009

Dear Prospective Graduate Student:

Thank you for your interest in the graduate program in Endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley.  Since you may apply to only one department/program on campus, make sure that you are applying to the most appropriate one (please refer to the Faculty in Endocrinology page).

The Graduate Application for Admission, Fellowship and Financial Aid is available online in early to mid-September at: http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/admissions/grad_app.shtml

Be sure to allow sufficient time for your letters of recommendation, transcripts, and test scores to arrive by the deadline.

Applicants who wish to be classified as California residents for tuition purposes should check the Residency office's web site http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Residency/legalinfo.html to be sure you are keeping the documents needed to maintain residency status.

The following is a checklist of required documentation and information:

q Completion of the on-line Graduate Application for Admission, Fellowship and Financial Aid.
Read the instructions carefully and complete all pages relevant to you. Be sure to include:

  • A current email address – this is the primary means of communication.
  • List faculty members you have contacted or whose research you are interested in. We strongly recommend that you initiate correspondence with faculty members with whom you are interested in working. You cannot be admitted without a faculty sponsor. Please refer to the Endocrinology faculty list for descriptions of faculty research interests.
  • G.P.A. after the first two years (international applicants do not need to calculate G.P.A.).
  • Statement of purpose and personal history statement. Take particular care in writing your statement of purpose. It is used to evaluate your preparation and aptitude for graduate study in our department.
q Three letters of recommendation; at least two letters must be from faculty familiar with your academic performance. We will accept letters directly from your recommenders or if more convenient, you can forward letters to us as long as they are in envelopes with unbroken seals and signatures intact. We will also accept letters directly from a letter service. Your recommenders also have the option of submitting on-line letters of recommendations. See Graduate Division website for detailed instructions and information.

q One official transcript from each college and graduate institution you have attended submitted in a sealed envelope. Institutions may mail your transcripts directly to Endocrinology. If you are currently a senior in an undergraduate program, transcripts for the first three years work are acceptable. Do not wait until records of the first quarter or semester of your senior year are available to apply. If you are admitted to our program, you will then submit official transcripts showing all course work and degrees awarded.

q GRE scores or another appropriate exam (i.e. MCAT).  The subject GRE test is not required.
Institution code: 4833; Department Code: 0299

q Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants from a country in which the official language is not English. Tests taken before June 2007 will not be accepted even if your score was reported to Berkeley.

Please send all supporting materials and documents to: Endocrinology Graduate Assistant, 3060 VLSB MC #3140, Univ. of California, Berkeley, CA 94720-3140. Send as many of the documents as you can together.
Do not mail to the Graduate Division.

Applications must be postmarked by January 15, 2009 (for Fall 2009).

Contact the Graduate Student Affairs Officer with any further questions or concerns.
